The US Merchant Marine Academy is located in Kings Point, Long Island, New York. Is is about 20 miles east of New York City. It provides a prestigious four year education to elite students committed to their future.
Every student is carefully selected based not only on academics but their physical fitness, character, leadership, athletic abilities, and community experiences. Those awarded admission receive an exceptional education with tuition, room and board, uniforms, and books FULLY paid. This means you can receive a college degree for absolutely FREE!!
What's the catch?
As we all know, nothing in this world comes free. A USMMA education is among the best you can receive. With full expenses paid, the US military requires a service obligation to the United States Army upon graduation. Graduates have two options upon graduation. First, they must work as an officer in the maritime or transportation industry for five years and/or serve in a Reserve unit for eight years. Their second option is to serve in any of the nations armed forces for five years on active duty. Graduates earn a Bachelor of Science and enter the US Armed Forces as a commissioned officer. In addition, they acquire their US Coast Guard License. Entering the Army as an officer means better pay and benefits.
Is it really that competitive?
Over 2,200 students applied, but only 354 appointments were offered. 33% of the class of 2017 were ranked in the top tenth of their graduating class. For the summary profile of the Class of 2017, click here. This will show the complete statistics and detail the competitiveness of the program.
